How to
Categorize Your Cookbook
Cookbooks can all be classified into a number of different
categories. Understanding where your book fits in will better help
you define and clarify your book's concept, and may help determine
the way the cookbook should be styled and presented. Studying these
categories may even inspire you with new ideas for other books.
The Seven Cookbook Categories
General
This is a cookbook that includes everything from soups and starters,
entrees and side dishes, desserts and baking, maybe even beverages.
It is not focused on a particular ingredient, style of cooking, or ethnicity.
Thematic
Thematic cookbooks maintain a tight focus on a particular theme. It
may a book devoted to muffin recipes or diabetic recipes, for instance.
Single-Topic Cookbooks
Single Topic cookbooks focus all the recipes on either a) one
specific ingredient (The Spaghetti Squash Cookbook, or b) one method
of cooking (The Microwave Cookbook), or, c) one cooking technique
(The Stir-Fry Cookbook). Other examples might be books where the
recipes all include curry; chocolate; or tomato sauce. Or books where
the recipes all require use of a wok, crockpot, or bread machine. Or
books where each recipe requires steaming, puree, or grilling.
Hybrid
Cookbooks which encompass two categories. For example, Cheesecakes of
New York. Or Cakes in the Microwave.
Specialty Giftbooks
"Coffee-table books" fall into this category. Specialty
Giftbooks are usually packed with fabulous photos, often large in
size and frequently hardcover. Or the cookbook may come with a
special gift item. For example, a book on cookies which comes with a
ribbon tied around it, to which is attached a pretty cookie cutter.
Gimmick
This type of cookbook is often based on a current fad which has
nothing to do with food. For example, The Macarena Cookbook, inspired
by the one-time hit song "The Macarena", and featuring
Mexican recipes.
Geographic
This category encompasses ethnic or regional topics. For instance The
Cantonese Cookbook; Recipes from the Big Easy (New Orleans,
Louisiana); or Texas Style Cookin'.
